Choosing the Right Hearing Aid | What Size is Best?

Now this is a question I literally get every single day. People are always wanting to know what the best size hearing aid is. I’ll hear things like, “Well my friend has the over-the-ear kind, and is pretty happy. But I really want something that nobody can see.”

So it’s a fair question. What is the best size hearing aid? The answer is not always simple, but I’ll do the best I can. First of all, there are no hard-and-fast rules about the size of hearing aid versus the type of hearing loss. Many providers would like you to believe that, but in my 30 years of experience, I really haven’t found that to be true.

How to Choose a Hearing Aid Size

When I’m working with a potential hearing aid candidate, I let them know that we have to make 3 decisions in order to get them hearing aids that are going to work the very best for them. The very first question is “what does the hearing aid look like?” Now that might seem like a silly question, but I’ve found that hearing aids that people won’t wear very seldom work well at all. A hearing aid that a person is comfortable with wearing is going to by definition be better than one that is sitting in the dresser drawer.

Now, does that mean any hearing aid can be fit on any hearing loss? The answer to that is no. There are some hearing losses that do require either one certain type of hearing aid, or at the very least will exclude a couple of models. The important thing is to have a conversation with a trusted provider and make the decision that is best for you.

I’m sure you’re wondering what the other two questions are. The second question is “what technology will work the best for me?” Finally, the third question is “how much do they cost?” I’ll need to cover those in the next blog and video.
